Checkup and Clean

It's easy to forget about how crucial regular dental checkups and cleans are for your long term oral health. Studies show that dental and gum health are not only important for your oral health, but can also have implications on your overall health and wellbeing. We recommend that most children and adults should seek a dental checkup or review, with cleaning, every 6 months.

People with a history of particular dental problems, such as gum disease, sometimes require more regular reviews until good oral health is established. Smoking, certain medications causing dry mouth, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene are among the considerations that will help your dentist advise how often you would benefit from a maintenance checkup and clean.

What will my dentist check?

  • Mouth - The soft tissues of your mouth include the tongue. Your dentist will examine these areas for spots, lesions, cuts, swellings, or growths that could indicate an oral health problem.
  • Gums - Your dentist will examine your gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Your dentist will look for signs of gum disease, which include red or puffy gum tissue and tissue that easily bleeds when gently poked.
  • Bite (Occlusion) - Your dentist will check how well your upper and lower teeth come together.
  • Teeth - Your dentist will check for signs of tooth decay by examining the surface of every tooth.
